4H Goat Project Day

Some of what we learned today. Its one thing judges ask the kids and want them to know..
I went with my mom to look at a house yesterday and there was a place that had Acres of wood pallets!! It was crazy.. This is just part of them in the pic...
We came around a curve and you could see for miles...
Looking the other way on the curve....
We went for a drive yesterday. We ended up driving past were the fires had been and some are still burning. We can see the smoke from the house.
This was still burning....
This is some that had already burned...
It burned out the undergrowth but didn't touch the old leaves on the trees...
As we were driving you could see smoke in about 4 different places... There was burned spots back in this area. On the far hill. That hazy look is from the fires.

I had an uncle who retired from the State Forestry Department and I remember the fires out by us. People knew he worked for the state and would set fires on their land which we happened to live by them. There was also a lot of state land by us and this time of year there were always fires. Its not green enough to slow anything down and the real spring rains haven't hit yet. People think to burn the old leaves and stuff off now and its not a good idea. That's how some of these get started.. Nothing more terrifying then for state vehicles to pull up and say you are in danger and we have to get ready for the fire that is coming this way as ashes float by you in the breeze and smoke starts blowing across the yard.. Its happened a few times. You grab a rake and get to work.
We had fun today with the 4H goat project. The kids are great with the animals. It was about 2 hours of learning and going over the goat information. Had a little hands on learning and we are planning a field trip soon to a bigger goat farm.
Its been a busy day and I am heading to bed! Have a good night everyone!

Cool pix! I love the openness of MO!!! How many acres is the place your mom is looking at? I didn't hear about any fires, but being in SoCal, we have our own fires to deal w/! What fires were going on there? Fire is one reason for water storage on the hill. I really think that irrigation is going to save our butts in the not too distant future. We know where we'll get the tanks. Now we have to find sources for hose & get the pipe to fill the water tanks in place. We need a ditch witch.

I am sorry about the fires? Are you a good distance from the fires?

We are several miles from the fires how ever JK who posted a comment above is pretty much in the middle of it. To the point of having fire crews around and trying to keep it from coming on to their property. We are needing some rain hopefully soon we will get some.

Great pictures, glad the fires are not too close to where you all are at.

I love looking at pix of MO, even if they have smoke in them. We SoCal folk are afraid of smoke! Earthquakes are just kinda fun, the world's greatest roller coaster, but smoke... that's scary stuff!
Hopefully, when we get the irrigation in place, we'd be able to water enough to defend against a grass fire. If it came thru & cleared out the underbrush under the trees, the goats would be unhappy, but hopefully, they'll have done their jobs & there won't be much to burn. :)
