Stinking Strays!!! Warning May Be Gross To Some...

Not such nice pictures.... This is what happens to ducks when you put off doing something about strays... We have had a bird dog type lurking around for a few days and the feathers every where is what happens when you don't take care of a problem... That is all that's left of the one duck that was possibly a female!!! I am so mad at myself.... I am mad at people for dumping the dog!!! If you don't want find it a home or shoot it!! I don't condone just killing an animal but when you dump them off they become desperate for food and will cause problems else where. And can also be dangerous at times.

And then my girls found this over by the pond... Its the remains to one of our bigger ducks... We cant figure out what would be able to carry one of these good sized ducks up into a tree... We thought maybe hawk... but the duck is bigger then the hawks... Our best guess is either the eagle.. he was back or a raccoon... But a raccoon would be pushing it.. It would have to be a big one.. This has all happened since one of our LGD's got hit up on the Highway... One LGD just don't cut it... 2 are in training....

This is one of the down sides of farming... Some people don't understand that sometimes you have to do things like get rid of strays... They can cost you alot of money, time , and hard work. They can take out animals you raised for months even years in a few minutes... All because some one didn't want them and decided to drop them off instead of taking them into the Humane Society... I know sometimes dogs wander off. But when you live this close to the dog pound/Humane Society You know most of the time people are dropping them off...

Okay I will hush... Good Night Everyone

Aw Tonia, I can relate. Hate to do it every time but I eliminate strays quick and in a hurry. After all, none of us raise livestock to feed a stray. Sorry about your ducks.

Maybe post a sign on the fence. "The dog you dump will NOT find a good home. It will be shot."
How many ducks do we have left?

These are roosting ducks. Could it have flown up into the tree to roost & the raccoon gotten it there?
If you put a sign up like that... do it on the section of farm on the other side of the river, on a tree. That way they won't associate it w/ Our Farm. People won't go the other side of the fence to pull it down before they dump their dog. There's a patch of woods over there, right next to the neighbor's gate. That gate is at the property line.

Oh Tonia.... that stinks! We had problems with the neighbors dogs wandering into the yard but as far as I know we never had a duck casualty due to them. Our biggest problem was always the coyotes and occasional opossum. I don't ever think I saw something like that in a tree. Maybe it was your eagle.

That stinks, I am so sorry for your loss! I hate strays and even worse is the well fed dogs that kill livestock for fun that have a home but the neighbors choose to let them run loose.
